FAIRFIELD, CT - Sophomore Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) led all attackers with 15 kills, while Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) had another solid defensive game with 22 digs to lead the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Iona and claim the SHU Invitational Saturday afternoon with a spotless 3-0 record.
After winning the opening set 25-16, the Pioneers got a stiffer test from the Gaels in the second. SHU opened up an early 8-4 lead on a pair of Colberg aces, but Iona tied it at 13 on an ace by Nicole Tamburri.
Iona, 1-5, held a 22-20 advantage but a service error and a bad set helped SHU tied it up. The score was tied at 24 when Hetherington slammed home a kill and Colberg notched her third ace of the game to to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers, now 5-1, ran out to a 9-2 lead in the third game but, again, the Gaels chipped away and tied it at 18 on three straight points off the serve of Theresa Harvey. An Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) kill gave the Pioneers a 21-19 lead and freshman Nicole Morales (Medford, NY) helped extend the lead to three with a point off her serve.
Hetherington, Colberg and sophomore Brittany Best (Norco, CA) were all named to the All-Tournament team.
The Pioneers will play at New Jersey Tech Wednesday.
