TEANECK, NJ - Sophomores Brittany Best (Norco, CA) and Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) each recorded double-doubles and five Pioneers had double-digit dig total to help the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team win it's Northeast Conference opener over Fairleigh Dickinson 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-13) Friday night.
Best finished with 18 kills and 14 digs, while Trimble collected 17 and 14. Sophomore Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) also had 14 digs, while sophomore Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) led all defenders with 23. Junior Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek (Santa Barbara, CA) chipped in 15 of her own to go along with 45 assists.
The win extends the Pioneer winning streak to four matches and moves them to 10-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play. FDU falls to 3-14 and 0-1.
After winning the opening set 25-19, the Pioneers had a strong attack in the second set. SHU hit an impressive .344 in the frame, making just three attack errors. In addition to the strong hitting, the Pioneers also had four aces in the set.
FDU came back to win the third set 25-23, taking advantage of 11 SHU attack errors and six service errors. Even with the errors the Pioneers hung tough and the game was tied at 17-17. A Best hitting error on the Pioneer serve gave the Knights an 18-17 lead and they would never trail the rest of the set.
Freshmam Elise Sage (Greenwood Village, CO) was the hitting star for the Pioneers in the fourth set, collecting six kills with just one error, as they blitzed the Knights 25-13 to close out the match.
