FAIRFIELD, CT - Sophomore Brittany Best (Norco, CA) had 13 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Johanna Ovsenek (London, Ontario) had 14 kills to lead the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 15-25, 25-22) win over Central Connecticut in a Northeast Conference match Saturday.
The win was the fifth straight for the Pioneers and lifted them to 16-7 overall and 6-1 in the NEC. Central drops to 12-12 overall and 6-2 in the NEC.
SHU took the opening set 25-20, using six kills from Ovsenek and four from Brittany Best (Norco, CA).
The Pioneers trailed set two 20-17 when head coach Rob Machan called his second timeout. Out of the break SHU scored the next three points, started by a kill from sophomore Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA). Freshman Elise Sage (Greenwood Village, CO) recorded two points off her serve to tie the game at 20-20.
Central had a chance to put the set away with the serve and a 24-23 lead but a Blue Devil attack error tied it at 24-24. Machan then put in senior Aurora Appel (Mendham, NJ) to serve and she got help from a pair of Sage kills to give the Pioneers the set and a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Devils got off to a quick 8-2 start in the third set, forcing a SHU timeout. The break didn't break the Central momentum. They built the lead to 11-2 and carried that to a 25-15 set win. Sara Delacey was the big Blue Devil hitter in the set with six kills without committing an error.
The Pioneers started strong in the fourth set and opened up a 14-9 lead. SHU held a 24-19 lead but the Blue Devils didn't go easily. A Tori Vaughn kill and a pair of points off the serve of Kaitlin Petrella closed Central within 24-22. Machan called a timeout to settle his troops and off the break Ashlyn Trimble ended the match with tenth kill.
