(West Long Branch) – The Sacred Heart University Cross Country men's team finished second in the Monouth Invitational , while the women finished fourth Saturday afternoon at Holmdel Park. The Pioneer men registered 73 points, while the women finished with 101 points. The 2011 Northeast Conference Championship will be run on the Holmdel course on October 29th.
East Stroudsburg took home the team title, finishing 10 points in front of the Pioneers. SHU was the top-NEC team at the event, finishing in front of Mount St. Mary's, Monmouth, St. Francis (NY), Quinnipiac, CCSU, Wagner, Bryant and Robert Morris.
Senior Jeffrey Lusignan (East Montpelier, VT) was the Pioneers top-runner with a time of 26:54.8 for a seventh overall finish pacing the Pioneers. SHU placed three runners in the top-12 of with senior Richard Marcello (Scituate, RI) in 10th place (26:55) and junior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) in 11th (26.55.5).
Senior Andrew Sullivan (Ellington, CT) finished in the top-20 taking 17th with a time of 27:22.2. Freshman Aleksandr Morin (Durham, CT) rounded out the top-five SHU finishers coming in 28th (27:41.2).
The women finished fourth ahead of Robert Morris, Wagner, Mr. St. Mary's, CCSU, and Bryant. Quinnipiac won the team title with Rutgers and Monmouth coming up second and third.
Grad student Brittany Heninger (Bristol, CT) took second place in the race, clocking in at 18:21.6. Sophomore Britteny Lane (Greenwich, NY) finished in the top-20 taking 15th overall with a time of 19:18.9.
Both Pioneer teams are back in action next Saturday, September 24th at the Fairfield University Invitational.
