Pioneer Women Run Second at Stony Brook Invite; Men Fifth

STONY BROOK, NY (September 1, 2012) - The Sacred Heart men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2012 seasons on Saturday afternoon, running in the Stony Brook University Season Opener.  The SHU women placed second in the five team field while the Pioneers were fifth in the first race of 2012.

The SHU women had three runners place in the top-10 in junior Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY), senior Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) and sophomore Emma Bolduc (Peterborough, NH). 

Castrogivanni turned in a fifth place effort on Saturday, finishing the 4K course in a time of 15:08.63.  Selmquist ran in eighth place, clocking in at 15:19:48, and Bolduc was 10th overall in a time of 15:29.14.

Senior Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ), sophomore Elizabeth Hutchins (Pawcatuck, CT) and junior Teresa Gagliostro (Township of Washington, NJ) all placed inside the top-20 finishers for SHU.  Navarro took 12th place in a time of 15:37.23 with Hutchins in 14th at 15:48.78.  Gagliostro finished in a time of 16:08.02.  Rounding out the SHU top-seven was senior Brittany Llobell (West Sayville, NY) in 21st place (16:14.96).

On the men's side, senior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) was the Pioneers top runner, placing eighth overall.  Connelly finished the 6K course with a time of 20:10.18.  Freshman Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, NY) took a top-20 finish in his first collegeiate race, clocking in at 20:31.97 for 17th place.

Rounding out the SHU top-seven runners was sophomore Aleksandr Morin (Durham, CT) in 24th (20:48.38), frad student Richard Marcello (Foster, RI) in 28th (20:58.20), freshman Nicholas Haile (Merrick, NY) in 34th (21:27.40), senior Justin Britton (Bay Shore, NY) in 36th (21:32.02) and junior Kevin Schumann (Wayne, NJ) in 45th (21:58.11).

Both teams will be back in action next weekend, Saturday, September 8th, when they take part in the Bryant Invitational.  Byrant University will be the site of the 2012 Northeast Conference Championship race in late October.
