SHU Women Ranked in Final Regional Poll Heading into NCAA Race
FAIRFIELD, CT (November 8, 2012) - The Sacred Heart women's cross country team were ranked 15th in the final regional rankings put out by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). It is the first time in program history the Pioneers have been ranked in consectuive polls.
The SHU cross country teams will run in Friday's NCAA Regional Championship at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Connecticut. The Pioneer women head into tomorrow's race ranked 15th in the Northeast and will be looking for their best Regional finish ever. Sacred Heart twice finished 19th at the annual race in 2000 and 2008. Last season, the Pioneers were 24th. There are 42 institutions that sponsor women's cross country in the Northeast Region
The Pioneers dropped one spot from 14 to 15 in the final regional poll. Quinnipiac moved up to 14th after beating the Pioneers by a slim eight points in the NEC Championship. Sacred heart senior Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT), junior Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) and senior Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) all finished in the top-six runners to garner All-Northeast Conference accolades.
The NCAA Regional race will start at 12:00 pm on Friday.
