MADISON, CT (November 9, 2012) – The Sacred Heart women's cross country turned in their best-ever finish at a NCAA Regional Championship race, finishing 16th at the 2012 Northeast Regional Friday afternoon at Hammonassett State Park. On the men's side, the Pioneers were 32nd out of 34 teams as a team.
The Pioneers entered Friday's race ranked 15th in the final U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Regional Poll and came in ahead of the 2012 Northeast Conference Champion Quinnipiac team who finished 20th overall.
All-NEC runners senior Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) and junior Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) led the Pioneers by finishing 62nd and 68th overall, respectively. Selmquist ran the 6k course in 21:22.2. She bested her previous personal best and school record time on a 6k course of 21:43, set at the Princeton Invitational.
Castrogivanni completed the course with a time of 21:27.3. She set a new personal best time, beating her 6k time of 21:54 set at the Princeton Invitational back in October.
Senior Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) finished in a time of 22:21.9, good for 123rd Sophomore Emma Bolduc (Peterborough, NH) finished in 129th with a time of 22:25.4 and senior Megan Papp (Niantic, CT) was in 143rd with a time of 22:41.1.
For the men, senior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) ran an impressive race, finishing 54th in the field of 239 runners. He turned in a time of 31:36.7
The Pioneers will close out the season on November 17th when they run in the ECAC/IC4A Championship at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, NY.
