FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University Department of Athletics kicked off its annual Heart-to-Heart campaign for the 2018-19 academic year on Friday.

The official kickoff for the event took place on Friday morning, with several hundred of the school's student-athletes lining up in the shape of a heart on Campus Field. All the athletes and coaches donned special shirts, featuring the Heart-to-Heart; SHUt Down the Stigma logo, and green bracelets, symbolizing the color for mental health.

Started by former women's hockey student-athlete, Devan Kane in 2017, Heart-to-Heart is an initiative designed to create mental health awareness and provide student-athletes with emotional assistance and support. In addition to existing resources on campus such as the Wellness Center, the initiative has support groups for injured athletes and those in need of support.

SHU athletic teams will host several Heart-to-Heart games throughout the 2018-19 academic year that will help raise awareness. SHU athletes will be wearing special Heart-to-Heart shirts during pregame warmups, as well as green ribbons to raise awareness. Other events have been held to raise money that has been put back into the student-athletes in the form of programs and resources that deal with mental health.

Game dates during the fall semester include:
Sept. 14 - Women's Volleyball vs. NJIT
Sept. 29 – Women's Rugby vs. Colby Sawyer
Oct. 12 -  Women's Soccer vs. Wagner
Oct. 13 - Swimming and Diving vs. LIU Post
Oct. 19 – Field Hockey vs. LIU Brooklyn
Oct. 27 – Football vs. Bryant
