Freshman Gina Arnone (Bridgwater, NJ) scored two goals and goaltender Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) made 22 saves as the Pioneers women's ice hockey team beat Robert Morris College 5-1 Saturday at the Milford Ice Pavilion. It was the second straight day the Pioneers defeated the Eagles.
Arnone got the Pioneers started right away. Michelle Panella (Marlboro, NJ) won the opening face off back to Katelin McLaughlin (Hingham, MA) who passed it to Arnone. She flipped a shot over the shoulder of Eagle goaltender Lori Barton to give the Pioneer a 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.
The same trio would strike again halfway through the first period. Arnone would finish with the goal, to raise her team leading total to four.
Senior Jessica Felt (Killingworth, CT) gave the Pioneers a 3-0 lead with 9 minutes to go in the first period. Freshman Whitney Dzaima (Walpole, MA) and senior Jane Auxier (Palm Beach, FL) set up Felt, who scored for the second straight game.
The Eagles answered Felts' goal just nine seconds later to cut the Pioneer lead to 3-1. Savannah Varner was able to score on a rebound shot for Robert Morris. However,
The Pioneers scored twice in the second period to put the game away. Dzaima recorded her second goal of the year just over one minute in to the frame. Sophomore Devon Gaslin (Augusta, ME) and senior Sarah Turbert (Norwalk,CT) got the assists.
Thirty seven seconds after Dzaima's goal, the McLaughlin-Panella-Arnone line would strike one more time for the Pioneers. This time Arnone and McLaughlin set Panella up for her third goal of the year.
In all, the Pioneers out shot the eagles 43-23 for the game and outscored them 11-1 over the two game weekend series.
The Pioneers are off next weekend. They begin a series of four straight on the road with two games at Maine on Friday, October 28th and Saturday the 29th. Game time for the opener is 4:00 pm.
