PRINCETON, NJ - The Sacred Heart men's
volleyball team got the attention of the homestanding Princeton
Tigers in the first round of the EIVA playoffs Saturday night. The
Pioneers took the first set from the Tigers and went to the wire in
the second, but were unable to dent the scoreboard further, falling
3-1 (30-28, 27-30, 14-30, 18-30).
SHU started strong, hitting .367 in the opening set. Sophomore
Mike Komlanc
(St. Croix, VI), who had an almost perfect night on attack, led the
Pioneers with four kills and four blocks in the frame. Komlanc and
Tim Sadowski
(Salem, NH) teamed up for the block that gave the Pioneers the
set.
The Pioneers held a 27-25 lead in the second set, forcing a
Tiger timeout after a Komlanc kill. After the break, Princeton took
the next five points to come away with a 30-27 win.
That loss seemed to take the wind out of the Pioneer sails and
the Tigers rolled through the next two sets, taking them 30-14 and
30-18. In the third, Princeton hit an amazing .824, collecting 14
kills in 17 attempts without making an error.
Komlanc finished with 12 kills for the Pioneers, hitting an
impressive .706. Roger Parent led the
offense with 18 put-aways.
The loss ends the season for the Pioneers at 18-11. Princeton
improves to 14-9 and will advance to the semifinals of the
tournament this week against #3 seed George Mason.
