Men's Hockey Shut Out By #15 Rensselaer 6-0

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Less than 24 hours after upsetting #1 UMass Lowell, the Sacred Heart men's hockey team dropped its home opener 6-0 to the #15 Rensselaer Engineers at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport Saturday afternoon.

Despite being outshot 10-5 in the opening period, Sacred Heart (1-1-0) hung with Rensselaer (1-0-0). The Pioneers fought off three consecutive penalties midway through the period to keep the game scoreless. The Engineers got on the scoreboard with 3:26 remaining in the period when Ryan Haggerty put a Matt Tinordi pass past Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, Sask.) to make the score 1-0. Rensselaer took over in the second period. The Engineers outshot Sacred Heart 13-3 and scored three goals to take a 4-0 lead.

For the game, Rensselaer outshot Sacred Heart 32-13. The Pioneers were 0-for-5 on the power play as the Engineers went 1-for-6. Rensselaer goaltender Jason Kasdorf made 13 saves for the shutout as Bodnarchuk had 26 for Sacred Heart. 

The Pioneers host Bentley in the Atlantic Hockey opener for both teams on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
