Mike Mawdsley's Seven Goals Power Sacred Heart Past Wagner 16-8

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Behind a career-high seven goals by senior attack Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.), the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team defeated the Wagner Seahawks 16-8 Tuesday night at Campus Field. The win is the Pioneers' third in a row.

Mawdsley's seven goals came on 10 shots, nine of which were on goal. Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) had five points on a goal and a team-high four assists. Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.) had three assists while Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.), Alec Dauses (Glen Arm, Md.), and Nick Fairley (Ellicott City, Md.) had two goals each. Senior defense Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Ohio) had five caused turnovers and six ground balls.

The two sides traded goals in the first quarter. Tallies by Wagner's (2-9, 0-4 NEC) Paul DeVita and Corey Santor were answered by goals from Sacred Heart's (5-7, 3-1 NEC) Fairley and Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.) to make the score 2-2 after the first period. Mawdsley gave the Pioneers a 3-2 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter. The senior scored three times in the second, but Wagner answered each goal to make the score tied 5-5 at halftime.

Wagner broke the tie with 13:22 to play in the third quarter, as a goal by Matthew Shute put the Seahawks ahead 6-5. That was the last lead for Wagner as Sacred Heart scored nine unanswered goals to take a 14-6 lead. Fairley opened the run with his second tally at the 9:59 mark, tying the game at 6-6. Gannon then scored 36 seconds later to give Sacred Heart a 7-6 advantage. Mawdsley had another three goals in the third quarter, with his sixth goal of the game giving the Pioneers an 11-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Marquis scored both of his goals 23 seconds apart in the fourth quarter, making the score 13-6 with 13:19 to play in the fourth. Mawdsley scored his seventh goal at the 11:24 mark, capping the Sacred Heart run and putting the score at 14-6.

Sacred Heart outshot Wagner 52-22 for the game, and 31-7 in the second half. The Pioneers also had a 42-28 advantage in groundballs and an 18-9 edge in faceoffs. Mark MacDonald (Billerica, Mass.) was 14-21 at the faceoff x for Sacred Heart.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, April 19 with a 1 p.m. game at Saint Joseph's.
