Pioneers' Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped At Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, falling to the first-place Saint Joseph's Hawks 21-9 at Sweeney Field.

The Pioneers had nine goals on 43 shots Saturday. Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.), Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.), and Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.) each had three points for Sacred Heart. Marquis and Miller each had two goals and an assist, while Dodge had a goal and two assists. Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) also had two goals. Mark MacDonald (Billerica, Mass.) won 15 of 30 faceoffs and had a team-high six ground balls.

Saint Joseph's (10-3, 5-0 NEC) scored the first four goals in the game as Michael Rastivo's second goal at the 7:06 mark made the score 4-0. Sacred Heart (5-8, 3-2 NEC) got back in the game with back-to-back goals by Marquis and Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.), getting within two at 4-2 with 3:57 left in the opening quarter. The Hawks closed the quarter with two goals in the last minute, taking a 6-2 lead into the second. Saint Joseph's outscored Sacred Heart 6-1 in the second quarter, ending the period with five unanswered goals to take a 12-3 halftime lead.

The Pioneers outscored Saint Joseph's 5-4 in the third quarter. Sacred Heart got goals from Gannon, Dodge, and Miller in the final three minutes to cut the Hawks' lead to eight, 16-8, heading into the final quarter. However, Saint Joseph's scored five goals in the fourth quarter to make the final score 21-9.

The Hawks outshot Sacred Heart 51-43 for the game, collecting 36 groundballs to the Pioneers' 28. Sacred Heart held a slim 18-17 edge on faceoffs. Rastivo and Ryan McGee each had seven points in the game on four goals and three assists. Mike Dougherty had two goals and two assists. Goalie T.J. Jones made 14 saves for Saint Joseph's.

Sacred Heart wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 26 with a 1 p.m. game against Mount St. Mary's for Senior Day.
