Broome Nets Career High in Loss at Yale

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second consecutive game Cane Broome scored a new career-high, netting 32 points in a 99-77 loss at Yale on Monday night. In a matchup of two teams that won its opener at the Connecticut 6 on Friday, the Bulldogs improve to 2-0 while the Pioneers are now 1-1.

After Sacred Heart scored the first basket of the game, Yale went on a 19-4 run over the next 8:03 and never looked back, as the lead never got smaller than nine points the remainder of the contest. Two Justin Sears free throws to make the score 19-6 with 11:27 remaining capped the stretch with nine unanswered points.

The lead stayed between 11 and 15 points for nearly the next nine minutes until two Jordan Allen free throws capped a 12-6 run that pulled the Pioneers within singles digits for the first time since the 13-minute mark, 39-30, with 2:36 showing. Jack Montague quickly halted any potential SHU momentum with successive three-pointers just 22 seconds apart, reestablishing the 15-point lead. Broome answered with a three of his own 14 seconds later, but Yale closed the half with the six final points, highlighted by a Sears dunk just before the buzzer that made the score 51-33.

Despite outshooting Yale 53.1 to 48.5 percent, SHU could not overcome 20 turnovers that led to 24 Bulldog points. The Bulldogs also held a 27-10 advantage in second chance points even though they won the rebounding battle by three, 35-32. Yale also made four more threes, 9-5, and six more free throws, 26-20 than the Pioneers.

Broome's 32 points came on 10-14 shooting and a perfect 9-9 from the line. He also dished out a game-high five assists. Jordan Allen chipped in 15 on a perfect 4-4 from the field and a career-best 7-9 from the charity stripe. Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week Quincy McKnight was in double figures for the second straight game with ten points, while Chris Robinson added a career-high eight points. Jermaine Ukaegbu led the Pioneers with six rebounds and two blocks.

Yale was led by Justin Sears, who scored 23 of his game-high 27 in the first half. In addition, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year recorded six rebounds, five assists, one block and one steal. He was one of four Bulldogs in double figures, as Makai Mason, Jack Montague, and Brandon Sherrod added 21, 15, and 12 respectively. Mason also had a game-high five assists, while Nick Victor pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Sacred Heart looks to bounce back on Wednesday with a 7 pm tip at UMass Lowell.

Noteworthy

  • The last time a Pioneer scored at least 30 points was on November 13, 2013 when Evan Kelley poured in 32 in a double overtime loss at Holy Cross. Broome also became the first Pioneer to shot 100 percent from the foul line with at least nine attempts since Louis Montes went 10-10 at Brown on November 29, 2012.
  • The 97 points allowed were the second most an opponent has scored on SHU in the past 62 games. Only Ohio State, who scored 106 on November 23 of last year, scored more in that stretch.
  • The last time SHU had a higher field goal percentage in a loss came on December 9, 2012, when it lost to Lafayette, 72-70, despite shooting 53.6 percent from the floor.

 Inside the Numbers

  • After turning the ball over just eight times in its season-opener, SHU turned it over 11 times in the first half.
  • Sacred Heart bounced back from a 54.8 percent (28-51) foul shooting performance by making 20-25 for 80 percent tonight. The Pioneers shot at least 80.0 percent from the foul line just twice in all of 2014-15

 How it Happened

  • First Half
    • Mason scored Yale's first seven points of the game
  •  Second Half
    • The lead fluctuated between 15 and 21 for the first half of the second
    • SHU got as close as 14, the closest it would get, twice. First when a Broome layup made it 72-58 with 9:46 left and again when another Broome layup cut the deficit to 85-71 with 5:01 showing.
    • Each time the Bulldogs responded with at least four straight points. The second time a Montague three capped seven in a row to push the lead to 92-71 with 3:20 remaining
    • A Blake Reynolds layup 1:23 before the buzzer capped a 12-2 run to give Yale its largest lead of the game, 97-75
