Box Score FAIRFIELD, CONN. (February 27, 2015)—Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led all players with 14 kills as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team was swept by Penn State Friday night on Coach Bike Court. Raymond Satagaj (Rocky Hill, Conn.) posted an errorless match hitting .500 (4-for-8) as the Pioneers fall to 4-7 on the season and 1-3 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action, while Penn State improves to 5-9 overall and 3-0 against conference opponents.
Sacred Heart couldn't tally more than one point in a row early in the first set allowing the Nittany Lions to jump out to a commanding 16-6 lead. Down 23-11, Mackenzie provided some spark for the Pioneers with four straight kills, but SHU's rally was cut short as kills from Penn State's Matt Calloway and Nick Goodell clinched the opening set for the Nittany Lions 25-16.
The Pioneers took the first point of the second set on another Mackenzie kill, but that would be all they got for a while as Penn State answered with an eight-point run jumping out to a big lead. Satagaj attempted to halt the streak sending down a kill, but it didn't slow the Nittany Lions who continued extending their lead to the 25-11 win.
The teams exchanged points to open the third set, tying the score three times before the Nittany Lions went on a three-point run to take an 8-4 lead. Back-and-forth action continued, with SHU cutting the deficit to just three points on several occasions, but were never able to make that last push to claim the lead and dropped the final set 25-21.
Sacred Heart takes Coach Bike Court again tomorrow night to battle Saint Francis U for the NEC Cup beginning at 7:00 p.m.
