Box Score FAIRFIELD, CONN. (March 21, 2015)—A trio of Pioneers led Saturday night's match with 11 kills as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team downed Marymount (VA) 3-1 on Coach Bike Court. Junior middleblocker Travis Vonholt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) hit .625, converting 11 of his 16 attacks for kills as SHU improves to 10-8 on the season. The loss drops the Saints to 10-17.
Sacred Heart couldn't get a handle on Marymount early in the first set falling behind from the start. But the Pioneers worked their way back into the set coming back to even the score at 11 on a kill from Austin Arcala (Long Beach, Calif.), who led the match-opener with five kills, but a Saints' kill tipped the scales back in their favor. The score evened again four more times, always improving in favor of Marymount. The Saints clinched the first set 25-22 with a kill from Erich Bratke.
The Pioneers came out red hot in the second set taking the first three points. From there they were dominant, never relinquishing the lead. Sacred Heart combined to hit .353 as they cruised to the 25-12 win evening the match at a set a piece.
The Saints got off to a good start in the third set extending their early lead to seven points, 18-11, before Vonholt slammed down a kill sparking a 9-1 run, which culminated in a 20-19 lead for the Pioneers. A kill from Tomasz Ksiazkiewicz leveled the score at 20 before another Vonholt kill started the push to finish line. After two Marymount attack errors put SHU up 22-20, Doug Dzema (Manalapan, N.J.) and Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) blocked T.J. Wiechecki to move the Pioneers to set point. A solo block for setter Eduardo Zardo (Brasilia, Brazil) gave Sacred Heart the set 25-20.
Mackenzie posted a perfect fourth set with five kills on five attacks en route to his total of 11 in the match. The Pioneers capitalized on 15 Saints errors while hitting .368 as team to dominate the final set. SHU used a 6-1 streak punctuated with a Mackenzie kill to claim the set 25-10 and clinch the win.
Sacred Heart hits the road next weekend, resuming EIVA play at George Mason on March 27 at 7:00 p.m.
