Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (February 8, 2015)—Michael Comens led the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team to two wins with 27 kills on Sunday completing the Pioneers' four-game sweep of this weekend's Coker Invitational. The wins over Holy Names and Marymount improve SHU's season record to an even 8-8.

Sacred Heart struggled early as Holy Names took an early 6-3 lead. A kill by Comens leveled the set at 9-9 before another run by the Hawks opened a 15-10 lead, causing a Sacred Heart timeout. The Pioneers clawed their way back into the set with an ace from Comens tying the set at 22-22. A service error and a Hawk kill gave Holy Names two set points. A final service error closed out the first set 25-23 for the Hawks.

After Holy Names took the first point on a service ace, the Pioneers rallied behind Travis Vonholt's five-point service run featuring two kills by Comens for a 5-1 lead in the second set. Sacred Heart dominated the set from there as Comens and Trent Thompson combined for nine kills in the 25-14 win.

The Pioneers got away with a close win in the third set, which saw the score tie on eight occasions. SHU broke a 15-all tie with a Vonholt kill and Comens ace for a two-point lead, which they maintained until the end when Comens clinched the win with his eighth kill of the set.

Holy Names held the lead throughout most of the fourt set looking like a decisive fifth was immenent, but the Pioneers chipped away eventually evening the score at 22 with a kill from Austin Arcala forcing the Hawks to call a timeout. The break worked for Holy Names who scored the next point bringing them within two of a win, but Arcala put the Pioneers at match point with back-to-back kills, but three consecutive SHU attack errors game the Hawks the fourth set 26-24.

The fifth set was another close one with the teams trading runs, but it was Tyler Lee's five-point service run that made all the difference lifting SHU to a 14-13 lead. Once again it was Comens who sealed the deal with his 27th and final kill of the match.

Graduate senior Enzo Mackenzie led the Pioneers' second match of the day against Marymount with 15 kills hitting .480 over the three-set win. Setter Eduardo Zardo racked up 35 assists in the match helping Sacred Heart to a combined .349 hitting percentage. After overcoming a three-point deficit to open the first set, the Pioneers led the rest of the way sweeping the Saints 25-20, 25-18, 25-16.

The Pioneers return home Friday, March 13 to face Barton at 7:00 p.m.
