Box Score NEWARK, Del. – Alex Perry, Ted Shaw, and PJ DeFilippo each recorded two hits as the Sacred Heart baseball team began its nine game road trip with a 9-1 setback at Delaware on Friday afternoon. Jayson Sullivan drove in SHU's lone run of the contest, plating Jesus Medina with a third inning double. After going unbeaten in five straight, the Pioneers have now lost three of four to drop to 6-17-1 in 2015. UD moves above .500 to 13-12.
Led by three hits each from Lopes and Donkin, UD outhit SHU 16-9 on the afternoon, and scored at least one run in seven of its eight at bats. Niggebrugge led the Blue Hens with three RBI's while Nardo added two. Davis picked up the win, going seven strong innings allowing the lone run on seven hits, and Martin and Alicknavitch each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Delaware jumped out to a comfortable early lead, scoring in each of the first four innings. Nardo put UD ahead early, lining a two out, two RBI triple to left center. Lopes and Donkin had each singled with one out before a strikeout brought Nardo to the plate. The Blue hens added another in the second thanks to situational hitting. Olenski led off the frame with a double and reached third on a groundout to second base. Niggebrugge brought him home with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
SHU tried to get back into the game with the third inning run, as Medina kept the inning alive with his two out single before Sullivan's double cut into the lead. Delaware would answer right away though, scoring two more in the bottom half. Once again the runs were scored with two outs, as Warrington and Niggebrugge delivered back-to-back RBI singles to give the Blue Hens a 5-1 advantage.
The Pioneers got runners into scoring position in both the fourth and fifth but could not take advantage. This allowed Delaware to put the game away for good, as the Blue Hens scored one each in the fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth.
Jason Foley was tabbed with the loss, pitching five innings and allowing six earned runs on ten hits.
Sacred Heart continues its road trip on Saturday, playing a doubleheader at Richmond beginning at 12 pm.
