Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team won its fourth consecutive game Saturday, taking down the Providence Friars 10-8 at Anderson Stadium.
For the third time this season, Joe Saggese scored four goals to lead all scorers. Julian Garritano and Matt Posch both scored two goals. Bryce Jurk had three points on a goal and two assists. Nick Albanese led SHU with five ground balls. Brooks Dutton made a season-high 17 saves.
Providence (3-2) and Sacred Heart traded goals in the first quarter. Tallies by the Friars' Brendan Kearns and Jarrod Neumann were answered by Saggese and Posch as the first ended 2-2. Providence took a 3-2 lead 0:39 into the second quarter on a Sean Leahey goal. The Pioneers took the lead, 4-3, with 9:28 to go after Garritano and Brian Masi scored back-to-back goals. Ryan Nawrocki tied the game with 6:21 to play in the half, but Saggese's second goal of the game with 0:39 left gave SHU a 5-4 halftime lead.
Sacred Heart (4-1) dominated the third quarter, outscoring Providence 3-0. Posch opened the scoring with a man-up goal at the 8:35 mark, assisted by Max Tuttle. Saggese then added a man-up goal with 6:15 to go, putting the score at 7-4. Jurk wrapped up the quarter with his only goal of the game with 0:02, giving SHU an 8-4 lead. Providence cut the Sacred Heart lead in half in the first 2:04 of the fourth quarter, getting goals from Conner Byrne and Tim Hinrichs to make the score 8-6. Garritano quickly ended the Friars' run with a goal at the 11:29 mark to put the Pioneers up by three, 9-6. The two teams then traded goals the rest of the way. Kearns got Providence within two, 10-8, with 1:19 to go but that would be as close as the Friars would get.
Providence outshout Sacred Heart 42-37, but the Pioneers held a 34-31 edge in groundballs. Mike Calvagna won 12 of 22 faceoffs for SHU, including 6-of-7 in the fourth quarter. Sacred Heart was 2-for-3 with the extra man. Kearns and Leahey each had two goals for Providence. Goalie Tate Boyce had 12 saves for the Friars.
Sacred Heart is back in action next Saturday, March 11 against Vermont at Campus Field at 3 p.m.
