AMHERST, Mass. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team moved to 1-1 on the season Tuesday after a 13-9 loss to the UMass Minutemen at Garber Field.

The Turning Point

UMass opened the game with two goals in the first 0:46 to take a 2-0 lead. Goals by Ben Spencer and Chris Connolly put the Minutemen ahead 4-0 and prompted a SHU timeout. Sparked by two goals from Joe Saggese, SHU went on a 4-1 run to get within a goal, 5-4, with 12:49 to play in the second quarter. The Minutemen led 8-5 at halftime, and used a 3-1 run late in the game to take a 13-8 lead.

First Quarter

- UMass opened the game on a 4-0 run. Noah Rak scored off the opening faceoff eight seconds into the game, with Jacob Lisauskas following with a goal at the 14:14 mark.

- SHU got on the board with 9:08 to play in the quarter. After a faceoff win by Mike Calvagna, Max Tuttle found Saggese right in front of the Minutemen goal for the Pioneers' first tally.

- Trailing 5-1, the Pioneers cut the deficit to two by the end of the quarter on goals by Saggese and Drew Edwards to make the score 5-3.

Second Quarter

- Kevin Cop capped a three-goal SHU run with his tally at the 12:49 mark of the quarter, putting the Pioneers within a goal at 5-4.

- UMass responded with back-to-back goals from Lisauskas and Buddy Carr to take a 7-4 lead with 7:00 left in the half.

- Saggese scored his third goal of the game with 5:57 to play, getting an assist from Tuttle.

- The Minutemen outshot the Pioneers 25-17 in the first half, taking an 8-5 halftime lead.

Third Quarter

- The two teams traded goals to open the quarter. A pair of goals from Julian Garritano, his first two of the season, were matched by goals from UMass' Devin Spencer and Chris Connolly to make the score 10-7 with 3:51 to go.

- The Minutemen added goals from Carr and Connolly in the final 1:35 to take a 12-7 lead.

- Seven of SHU's nine shots in the quarter were on goal.

Fourth Quarter

- Garritano completed his hat trick with a goal at the 13:53 mark, getting SHU within four at 12-8.

- After a Connolly goal made the score 13-8, Cop scored his second goal to make the score 13-9 with 7:08 remaining.

- SHU outshot UMass 12-6 in the final quarter.

Key Stats and Notes

- Tuesday's game was the first meeting between the Pioneers and Minutemen since 2010.

- Saggese and Tuttle each had four points for the second straight game. Saggese had a hat trick and an assist. Tuttle tied a career-high with a game-high four assists.

- Garritano had three goals after being held off the scoresheet on Saturday at Stony Brook.

- Brooks Dutton made eight saves in goal and was one of four Pioneers to collect four groundballs. Logan Liljeberg, Nick Albanese, and Landon Kramer also had four grounders.
