Rugby Wins 2018 Pioneers Sevens Tournament

The Sacred Heart University women's rugby team captured its second consecutive Pioneers Sevens Tournament crown on Saturday, with a perfect 5-0 record.

Isabel Cuddy spearheaded the Pioneers effort on the day. She finished with nine tries, eight tackles and six runs of 20; leading the team in each category.

The event ended the Pioneers spring season. SHU went 10-7 in sevens play this spring.

The Pioneer Numbers

  • Cuddy scored nine tries at the event, with three in the Pioneers 24-12 win over Brown during round robin action
  • Tyffanny Brisbane scored all three of her tries in the championship match, scoring twice in the first-half, to erase an early Brown lead
  • Kaitlin Lagase also had three tries on the day, while Kaylee Hale, Tessa Buckey and Allie Rinaldi added a pair each
  • Camyrn Chester had four tackles in the championship match and finished with six on the day

How It Happened – Match 1

  • SHU struck early, when Cuddy touched in the try zone 60 seconds into the opening match versus LIU Post
  • Cuddy accounted for both Pioneer first-half tries, and Hale converted both kicks after for a 14-0 lead at the break
  • The Pioneers received tries from four different players in the second-half as they pulled away for the win
  • Cuddy had a pair of runs of 20 in the match, while Lagase led the team with two tackles

How it Happened – Match 3

  • Buckey got the Pioneers going in the Pioneers matchup with Mount St. Mary's, scoring at the 5:23 mark of the first
  • Cuddy sandwiched tries around one from Hale as the Pioneers built a 24-0 lead at halftime
  • Cuddy had three tackles for the Pioneers in the victory

How it Happened – Match 5

  • Cuddy gave the Pioneers the early led, with a try 1:53 into the contest
  • Brown tallied the first points of the day allowed by SHU at 3:08 and put the Pioneers behind for the first time with a try at 1:17 to take a 12-7 lead into the break
  • Cuddy scored 61 seconds into the second half and put SHU in front for good with a try at the 1:55 mark

How it Happened – Match 9

  • SHU never trailed, but needed a late try from Rinaldi, with 40 seconds left in regulation, to stave off the Molloy upset bid
  • Lagase started the scoring at the 4:55 mark and Cuddy scored with 3:09 to play before the break, to build a 10-0 lead
  • Molloy answered at the end of the half, and scored midway into the second to knot the score 10-10
  • Rinaldi added two tackles in the win

How it Happened – Championship Match

  • Brown opened the scoring with a try at the 5:12 mark, but missed the conversion to lead 5-0
  • Brisbane took over in the later stages of the half, scoring twice at 2:18 and with 11 seconds left, to give SHU a 14-5 lead into the break
  • Cuddy tallied her final try 90 seconds into the second half, to push the advantage to 21-5
  • After a Brown score closed the deficit to nine, 21-12 with 2:46 to play, Brisbane sealed the win with 80 ticks left with her third tally
  • Chester recorded a match-high four tackles for the Pioneers
  • Brisbane finished with the three tries, two tackles and two runs of 20 or more
