Seahawks Get the Best of Pioneers 67-62

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Even though the Sacred Heart University women's basketball team got out to a fast start, it couldn't hold on the rest of the way. The Pioneers dropped a 67-62 Northeast Conference contest to Wagner College on Thursday at the William H. Pitt Center.

Of Note:
Winning for the first time at Sacred Heart since 2000, the Seahawks shot 46.2 percent from the floor while holding the Pioneers to 33.3 percent.

Adrianne Hagood knocked down a three-pointer with 6:13 to play that cut the WC margin to 55-51. Alayshia Dailey capped an ensuing 9-2 Seahawk run to give the visitors an 11-point lead (64-53) and put the game out of range.

Wagner was able to capitalize on SHU miscues as Sacred Heart committed 20 turnovers which Wagner converted into 25 points. The Pioneers only mustered 12 points off 17 Seahawk mistakes.

SHU got out to its best start of the young season, posting 20 points in the first quarter with nine coming from Hagood. 

The offense sputtered to start the second quarter as the Seahawks built a 30-24 lead on back-to-back Emilija Krista Grava baskets. SHU closed the half on a 9-4 run to pull within 34-33 at the intermission thanks to a Sonia Smith jumper.

Jayla Davis hit a three-pointer to put the Pioneers up 37-34 just 90 seconds into the second half, but Wagner responded with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 44-39 lead on a Khaleah Edwards layup. The Seahawks closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 53-44 advantage into the final quarter.

Leading all players was Hagood as she dropped in a season-high 23 points. No other Pioneer was in double figures, but Kelsey Wood and Carly Stroemel both missed double doubles as they pulled in 10 and 11 rebounds, respectively. SHU had a 41-30 rebounding advantage.

Wagner had three players in double figures, topped by 20 from Kem Nwabudu who also pulled in a team-high six rebounds. Krista Grava followed with 15 points and Dailey came off the bench to produce 11.
