Sacred Heart struggled in the first half as it turned the ball over 11 times, resulting in 11 points for LIU.
The Pioneers were down by 13 in the first minutes of the third quarter, but a layup from
Nikki Johnson sparked a 12-5 run that trimmed the Sharks lead to six points, 39-33.
Sonia Smith drained a three to start the fourth quarter, followed by a
Kelsey Wood layup to make it a one-point game, 39-38. Both teams continued to trade baskets before
Maiya Bergdorf scored off the assist from Smith to bring the game back to one, 45-44.
The last 17 seconds were crucial as LIU scored two free throws before
Adrianne Hagood tipped in a layup that forced a 30-second Sharks timeout. The last five seconds was a battle from the charity stripe. LIU scored 1-of-2 before Hagood was fouled for a chance to help Sacred Heart pull even. However, the graduate student missed both free throws, including one on a lane violation. The Sharks would drain two to ice the victory.
The Pioneers shot 17-of-41 (41.5%) from the field despite the struggles compared to the Sharks' 15-of-49 (30.6%). LIU had the advantage at the stripe thanks to 16-of-21 (76.2%), while Sacred Heart shot 9-of-13 (69.2%).
Hagood led the Pioneers with 13 points, scoring double-figures for the ninth time this season.
