Sacred Heart Opens NEC Tournament Against LIU

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The No. 2 Sacred Heart University women's basketball team readies for the postseason as it welcomes No. 7 LIU to the Pitt Center for the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference tournament on Monday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3 with Paul Dottino and Tykera Carter on the call.
 
OPENING TIP
  • Sacred Heart enters the NEC Tournament as the No. 2 seed for the first time since 2019 and hosts LIU for the quarterfinals.
  • The Pioneers face the Sharks for the fifth time in postseason history, with the last meeting dating back to 2006. SHU came out with the 64-50 victory over LIU on home court to advance to the championship game.
  • The Pioneers are second in the NEC in offensive rebounds with 12.8 per game and combined rebounds with 37.0 per game.
  • Pryor became the first player in program and NEC history to be selected to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watchlist. The first year is a 13-time NEC Rookie of the Week, two-time NEC Player of the Week and five-time Met Basketball Writers Association Honorable Mention honoree. Pryor is the leader in the nation in steals per game (4.1) and second in steals overall (114). In addition to being the leader in the conference in scoring (17.9). Pryor has scored 20+ points in 12 games.
  • Sajada Bonner leads the Pioneers and is third in the NEC with 55 three-pointers made. The graduate student notched a career-high six triples against SFBK.
 POSTSEASON HISTORY:
  • Sacred Heart has qualified for the NEC Tournament in 23 of the last 24 seasons since joining the conference in 1999.
  • The Pioneers secured the No. 2 seed and home advantage with a victory against CCSU on Feb. 25.
  • SHU finishes in NEC play in the top three for the 19th time in program history.
  • The Pioneers have won the NEC Quarterfinals in five of the last seven seasons.
  • SHU is 21-24 all-time in postseason. In their history, the Pioneers have won three NEC titles (2006, 2009, 2012) and made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2006, 2009, 2012) and three in the WNIT Tournament (2013, 2016, 2017).
  • SHU and LIU face each other in the NEC tournament for the first time since 2006. Both teams are 2-2 against each other in postseason play.
  • The Pioneers are 17-8 when playing postseason contests at the Pitt Center.
