Pioneers Take Down LIU 10-9 at Home

Morgan O'Reilly scored four goals and Alex Pazienza made 18 saves to lead SHU.

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Junior Morgan O'Reilly scored four goals to lead the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over Long Island University at home on Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. Junior goalkeeper Alex Pazienza tied his career-high in saves with 18, in goal for the Pioneers.

Of Note:
After ending the first quarter trailing, 4-3, the Pioneers used a strong second quarter, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 7-4 lead. Four different Pioneers scored in the fourth as SHU shut down LIU to hold the advantage at the half.

The Sharks opened the third quarter with a goal at 13:47 to pull within two 7-5 until Jake Garb found the back of the net, giving the Pioneers an 8-5 lead.

Both teams took advantage of penalties as they traded man-up goals through the third quarter, but Sacred Heart controlled its lead 9-6, heading into the final quarter.

LIU scored back-to-back goals in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter. Sal Miccio scored his second of the day at 5:13 to get SHU ahead by two, 10-8. The Sharks were able to get one more with 42 seconds left in the game, but the Pioneers shut down any attempts after that for its second straight home win on Campus Field.

Pazienza, who earlier in the week was announced to the USILA DI Dynamic Team of the Week, tied his career-high  18 saves in the cage for Sacred Heart.
