SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Owen Nassaney took the win in the high jump to lead the Sacred Heart University men's track and field team in its 11th-place finish at Bryant's Black & Gold Invitational, which ended on Sunday.
The Pioneers placed 11th of 16 teams with 34 points as a team. Bryant won its home meet with 97 points, edging UMass Amherst with 93.5.
Nassaney recorded the Pios' best individual performance by taking top honors in the high jump with an outdoor personal-record mark of 2.02m. Nassaney has won four times this season, all in the high jump.
SHU also picked up a win and 10 points in the 4x400m. The team of
Rafael Mahario,
Jonathan Mahon,
Connor Meikle, and
Dominic Miele finished the event in a time of 3:21.81 to top the 14-team field.
Dylan Hunt posted a solid day for the Pioneers, taking fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.30m before finishing 12th in the long jump (5.77m).
The Pios' final top-five finisher was Miele, who placed fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 50.68. Meikle took 15th in the 400m with an outdoor PR of 53.39.
Rounding out Sacred Heart's top-10 placers were
Daniel DiGangi and Mahon. DiGangi (4.00m) took eighth in the pole vault, while Mahon (22.47) finished ninth in the 200 meters.
Corry Brinken did not finish much behind Mahon by taking 12th with a time of 22.71.
SHU had three more competitors tie or set new personal records.
Matthew Vene (15:35.40) set a PR in the 5,000 metes to take 11th, and
Roberto DaCosta (15:35.40) tied a PR in the 100 meters. In addition,
Liam Tharin set a new personal record in the discus (38.56m) and the hammer throw (35.62m).
The Pioneers hit the track again for the New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 7-8.
