Pioneers Fall to Siena in MAAC Quarterfinal

Sacred Heart made its first postseason appearance since 2019

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.—The fifth-seeded Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team fell 13-11 to the fourth seed, Siena College, on Saturday afternoon on the road in the opening round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) postseason tournament. Junior Morgan O'Reilly led the Pioneers with five points from four goals and one assist in SHU's first postseason appearance since 2019.

Of Note:
As the fifth seed, Sacred Heart was making its MAAC postseason debut and first postseason appearance since the 2019 season in the Northeast Conference semifinal.

The Pioneers opened the game quickly as Morgan O'Reilly and Michael Moreschi put away a pair to take a 2-0 lead within the first three minutes. Siena was able to find their groove as they went on to score the next four goals to take a 4-2 lead. The O'Reilly and Moreschi duo answered with two more to tie it up 4-4 with 5:18 left in the opening quarter. The Saints answered quickly with one more to take a 5-4 lead, but Sacred Heart tallied the next three goals to hold a 7-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Siena fired away four straight goals to take a 9-7 lead. Johnny Morgan brought the Pioneers within one, 9-8, at 7:03 with his first of the day. The Saints held the 9-8 lead at the half. 

Siena opened the third quarter with a goal at 12:41 to extend its lead, 10-8. O'Reilly notched his third of the day at 12:04 to bring the Pioneers within one, 10-9. The hosts answered as they took advantage of a man-up opportunity to go back up by two, 11-9. Siena was able to take the largest lead of the game by either team, going up, 12-9 at 3:04 before O'Reilly found the back of the net for his fourth of the day to make it 12-10 that would hold to the end of the third quarter.

Siena scored once more, 12 seconds into the fourth quarter, but neither team could find the back of the net until 3:13 in the fourth when Skyler Wilde put away his second of the game to cut the Pioneers deficit, 13-11, which would hold as the final score.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Pazienza made 13 saves for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers wrap up the season at 5-10 overall and 5-4 in conference during their first year in the MAAC.
