Pios Tie for 15th at NEICAAA Outdoor Championships

SHU tallied three top-five showings

DEDHAM, Mass. – The Sacred Heart University men's track and field team competed at the two-day New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) at the Solomon Outdoor Track on Friday and Saturday. 

The Pioneers placed in a tie for 15th at the event with 16 points, matching Vermont. SHU needed 12 more points to crack the top 10, as Maine finished 10th with 28 points. 

Benjamin Healy led the way for the Pios, placing third in the decathlon with a personal record of 6,257 points. The senior posted four PRs in the event, setting new marks in the 100m (11.21), 400m (50.51), discus (28.59m), and 1,500m (4:41.61). In addition, he racked up wins in the 100m, high jump (1.80m), 400m, and 1,500m. 

Douglas Suter joined his teammate by earning points in the decathlon by placing eighth. The first year set a new PR with 5,202 points while setting personal records in the high jump (1.59m), 400m (53.06), discus (25.78m), and javelin (44.31m). In addition, he tallied an event-best third-place showing in the javelin and 1,500m (4:46.80). 

The Pios' next best finish came in the 4x400 relay, as SHU took fourth for five points. Jonathan Mahon, Jack Sarkisian, Rafael Mahario, and Dominic Miele comprised the Pioneers' squad, posting a time of 3:18.14. 

Rounding out Sacred Heart's point scorers was Owen Nassaney. The senior placed fifth in the high jump by clearing 2.00m. 

SHU also saw Cameron Croce, Dylan Hunt, and Blake Stewart compete in finals this weekend. Croce finished 15th in the hammer throw, Hunt took 18th in the triple jump, and Stewart placed 23rd in the long jump.
