ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (October 8, 2024) – The Sacred Heart University men's fencing team opened the 2024-25 campaign over the weekend, with the team in action at the North American Cup, held at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
Ethan Logue (Pleasanton, Calif.) tied for 81
st, out of 433 competitors in the Division I epee competition, to lead the way for the Pioneers.
In all, SHU had 13 student-athletes in action across seven events in Atlantic City on the weekend. Logue's performance in the massive DI men's epee tournament was arguably the most impressive of the bunch. Following the first round of pool play, he won three straight elimination bouts to advance to the event's second round of pool play, where he eventually bowed out in a tie for 81
st.
Also in the DI epee,
David Bailey (Coram, N.Y.) and
Benjamin Fleckenstein (LaFayette, N.Y.) advanced to the round of 256, with the former narrowly missing out on advancing further, via a 15-14 defeat.
Three Pios advanced to the knockout rounds of the DI foil competition, with
Jacob Bartel (La Mesa, Calif.),
David Belluomo and
Chaissen Costello (Tiverton, R.I.) all qualifying for the round of 256 before bowing out. Costello placed 170
th (of 305), Bartel was 184
th and Belluomo finished 212
th.
Highlights at other levels of competition include at least one Pio winning at least one elimination match in each discipline of DII competition. In the epee, Bailey won two elimination bouts to advance to the round of 32 and finished 20
th, out of 205 fencers. In the foil, Bartel picked up an elimination victory before falling in the round of 64 to finish 47
th, out of 213. In the sabre,
Zander Wolmart won his first elimination bout and exited in the round of 128 to finish 105
th, of 204.
SHU is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Temple Open in Philadelphia.
