BETHLEHEM, Pa.: The Sacred Heart University men's wrestling team concluded its weekend trip to Pennsylvania as the Pioneers competed in the Journeyman Collegiate Classic, a premier round-robin NCAA Division 1 wrestling tournament, hosted at Freedom High School.
About Journeyman:
Each weight class is divided into several groups (A through H), which are then divided into two pools (unless the group is small enough, then everyone is in the same pool). The best records in each pool within the groups then wrestle for placements, while the single pool groups are awarded placements based on their records.
Of Note:
- The Pioneers finished the one-day event with Braxton Fries-Appello, at 133C lbs, and Dakota Asuncion, at 157D lbs, finishing in the top two spots in their designated weight class bracket.
- Fries-Appello ended the day with wins over Lock Haven's Clayton Carr by major decision, 15-4, and Cornell's Foster Cardinale by fall (1:38).
- Asuncion ended the day with an overall record of 2-1 behind a fall (5:30) against Army West Point's Taythan Silva and a tech fall, 20-4, against fellow teammate Nicholas Mackland-Rivera.
- Jake Ice, Nick Demarco, Calvin Pineda, Connor MacDonald, and Owen Ayotte collected a win on the day in their designated weight class bracket.
- Coming in second place were two wrestlers – Ice and Ayotte - followed by 14 wrestlers coming in third.
- Six individuals placed fourth, and four fifth-place finishes.
