Women’s Basketball Welcomes Coppin State for Sunday Matinee

Pioneers host the Eagles for the first time in the two teams’ histories

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team returns to the William H. Pitt Center on Sunday, Nov. 24, for a 2 p.m. nonconference contest against Coppin State.

OPENING TIP
  • SHU will battle the Eagles for the first time in the two teams' histories on Sunday afternoon. 
  • Coppin State joins new MAAC foes Marist, Niagara and Canisius as the three teams SHU will play for the first time this season. 
  • The Pios head into Sunday fresh off of a thrilling 63-56 win over Monmouth on Thursday evening in the team's first game in the newly-renovated William H. Pitt Center. 
  • After a first half that featured back-and-forth play, SHU overcame an eight-point Monmouth lead in the second half to open the arena with a win. 
  • The Pioneers thrived Thursday at the 3-point line, hitting a season-best nine triples on 9-for-21 (42.9%) shooting. 
  • Ny'Ceara Pryor and Amelia Wood led the way for SHU with 19 points. 
  • Pryor sank seven free throws and six shots from the field, while Wood tied a career-high with five 3-pointers. 
  • Pryor also led the team in rebounds and assists, with eight and three, respectively. 
  • Dianne Crespo López was also critical to the victory, hitting a pair of big 3's in the fourth and finishing with a season-best 11 points.  
LAST TIME OUT
It was a historic night for the Pioneers, as they won their first game in the renovated Pitt Center, defeating Monmouth 63-56. It was a hard-fought start to the game as SHU led by one point after the first quarter and the Hawks were up one going into halftime. Monmouth went up by as much as eight in the third quarter before SHU started to rally. The Pioneers ended the third and started the fourth on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 43-43. An 11-3 surge a little later swung the bout in SHU's favor, as the Hawks could not even the score again. Ny'Ceara Pryor and Amelia Wood led the way for the Pios with 19 points each, while Dianne Crespo López sank a pair of late triples to help swing the game. 

RULE OF 3'S
Some home cooking must have been exactly what the Pioneers needed to get their 3-point shooting back in order. In front of a raucous home crowd, SHU went 9-for-21 (42.9%) from deep, outscoring its opponent by 18 points from behind the arc. Wood led the charge with five triples, tying a career-high for the junior. She went 5-for-7 from deep, with three coming in the second half during the Pios' comeback. Crespo López hit two 3's, both coming in the exciting fourth quarter. Sierra Johnson and Carmen Williams hit Sacred Heart's other two triples.  

SCOUTING COPPIN STATE 
  • The Eagles are 2-3 to start the season, with a very tough opening slate of games.
  • Coppin State has already lost to a pair of nationally-ranked teams in, No. 1 South Carolina and No. 18 Maryland, in addition to a road loss at Virginia Tech. 
  • The Eagles own wins over Division II Frostburg State (72-70) and SHU's former NEC rival Saint Francis (74-38). 
  • Both of those wins were at Coppin State's home arena in Baltimore, Md.
  • Leading the way for the Eagles is senior forward Laila Lawrence with 18.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. 
  • Lawrence put up 20 points in CSU's games against South Carolina and Virginia Tech, and double-doubles against Maryland (16pts, 10reb) and Saint Francis (19pts, 11rebs). 
  • Redshirt senior guard Tyler Gray has been the Eagles' lead facilitator with 27 assists, which ranks 31st in the country.

  • Sunday will mark the first-ever meeting between the Pioneers and Eagles.
