Women’s Basketball Heads to FDU for Thursday Showdown

The Pioneers hit the road for the first time in almost three weeks

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team hits the road for the first time in 19 days on Thursday, Feb. 22, to play FDU at 7 p.m. in Teaneck, N.J.

OPENING TIP
  • The Pioneers head to the Garden State Thursday for the 48th all-time meeting against the Knights.
  • SHU is riding a four-game win streak against FDU into Thursday's game, including taking this season's matchup 68-51 on Jan. 27. 
  • The Pioneers earned their 10th league win on Saturday with a convincing 79-55 victory over Wagner at the Pitt Center. The Pios were ahead by 11 after three quarters and pulled away late with a stellar fourth quarter to secure the 24-point home win.
  • Ny'Ceara Pryor led all scorers with 21 points Saturday, adding eight points and six assists. She also took a career-best 18 free throws in the process. 
  • After posting a big week, Pryor was named Player of the Week by both the MET Basketball Writers and the NEC. 
  • Olivia Tucker and Amelia Wood were also lights out against the Seahawks. Tucker was the game's second-leading scorer with 18 points and hit four 3-pointers. Wood finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds, her ninth double-digit scoring effort in her last 11 games.
  • Before Saturday's game, SHU recognized graduate student Sajada Bonner and senior Kelsey Wood for their commitment to the Pioneers over their tenures.

WEEKLY AWARDS UPDATE
For the whopping eighth time this season, Pryor was named the NEC Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. The Baltimore, Md., native paced all players with 21 points in SHU's 79-55 win over Wagner on Saturday. She also had eight rebounds, six assists and three steals in an all-around effort. Pryor also excelled at getting to the line against the Seahawks, taking a career-best free throws. No other player in the conference has won this award more than three times this season, as Pryor is up to 10 POW nods in her illustrious career. In addition to being named the league's Player of the Week, Pryor was tabbed the Division I Women's Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association on Tuesday. 

AMAZING AMELIA
Pryor isn't the only SHU sophomore playing her best basketball this season, as Amelia Wood has really come into her own in year two. After posting a 17-point, eight-rebound performance against Wagner on Saturday, Wood is second on the team in scoring (11.0), rebounding (5.6) and steals (1.7) per game.

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
The Knights head into Thursday third in the league standings at 8-3. Overall, FDU is 10-14 on the season, winning their four games since falling to the Pioneers on Jan. 27. The Knights most recently defeated Saint Francis 68-48 on the road on Feb. 17. Abby Conklin continues to lead the way for the Knights as she is ninth in the country in minutes per game at 37.19. She also leads the NEC in 3-pointers (58), 3-pointers per game (2.42) and 3-point field goal percentage (35.8%). Teneisia Brown has commanded the Knights in the post with a league-leading 7.1 boards per game. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. FDU
Saturday's contest will mark the 48th all-time meeting between the Pioneers and Knights, with SHU winning 36 of the first 47 matchups. SHU enters Saturday riding a four-game win streak against FDU, taking all three meetings last year and this season's tilt, 68-51, on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
