Women’s Basketball Battles CCSU Friday

Tipoff between in-state foes is set for 7 p.m. at the Pitt

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team it back at the Pitt Center on Friday to welcome in-state foe Central Connecticut at 7 p.m. in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.

OPENING TIP
  • The Pioneers and Blue Devils will meet for the 63rd time on Friday, with Sacred Heart owning a 42-20 lead in the all-time series. 
  • SHU has won nine out of the last 10 meetings in the series, with a split last year ending an eight-game win streak by the Pios.  
  • The Pioneers head into Friday after taking the solo lead in the NEC standings following a convincing 73-55 victory over Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon in a battle between the top two teams in the league. 
  • SHU hit 10 3-pointers against the Dolphins, the team's second-highest total of the year. 
  • Sajada Bonner led the group with a career-high tying six triples. She also finished as the team's highest scorer with 18 points. 
  • Olivia Tucker was also lethal from behind the arc with three 3-pointers and a season-best 15 points. 
  • Ny'Ceara Pryor had one of her typical all-around performances with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. With 17 points Saturday, Pryor needs just 14 more to reach 1,000 in her career. 
  • Amelia Wood and Nalyce Dudley also ended the day with stellar stat lines. Wood had eight points, seven rebounds and two steals, while Dudley racked up six points and six boards.

SHARP SHU-TERS
The duo of Bonner and Olivia Tucker shot the lights out of the ball on Saturday, going a combined 9-for-15 from behind the arc. Bonner tied a career high with six 3-pointers on 10 attempts, while Tucker went 3-for-5. SHU hit 10 triples against the Dolphins as a team, two shy of its season high. Bonner heads into this week third in the NEC with 1.9 made threes per game, while SHU ranks second as a team in 3-point field goal percentage (.282).

HIGH FIVE
Heading into Friday, Sacred Heart is riding a season-best five-game win streak. During this current run, the Pioneers beat their opponents by an average of 19.4 points per game. SHU is scoring 74.8 points per game while holding their opponents to 55.4. Pryor and Amelia Wood have led the way during this streak with 18.0 and 17.0 points per game, respectively. Pryor is also averaging 6.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.8 steals per game in the five victories.

SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
The Blue Devils head into this week tied for fourth in the NEC standings with a 4-5 record. CCSU is 6-16 overall after winning back-to-back games against Saint Francis and Merrimack. After leading the Blue Devils to a pair of conference wins last week, sophomore Samora Watson was tabbed the NEC Player of the Week. Watson averaged 32.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game for the week, including a 37-point explosion against Merrimack. For the season, Watson leads the NEC with 18.1 points per game and has hit 35+ points in three games this year. She also paces the team with 5.9 rebounds per game. Belle Lanpher has also been a key contributor for the Blue Devils, leading the team with 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She also ranks second on the team in scoring (13.1 ppg). 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CCSU
The all-time series between SHU and CCSU has featured 62 games and started in 1980. The Pioneers have dominated the series, winning 42 of the 62 contests, including nine of the last 10. The lone loss came last season on the road in New Britain, Conn. 

NY MILESTONE WATCH
After Saturday, Pryor is up to 986 points in her two-year career, putting her just 14 shy of the prestigious 1,000 mark. The outstanding sophomore guard has appeared in just 56 games in her career, maintaining an average of 17.6 points per game entering Saturday. If Pryor scores her 1,000th point this season, she will be the second Pioneer to accomplish the feat this year, as Bonner did so on New Year's Eve against Mercy. Pryor is also one steal shy of reaching 200 in her career. 

MORE MILESTONES ON DECK
In addition to Pryor, a handful of other Pioneers are on the precipice of reaching career milestones. After Saturday, Wood is now two points from 500 in her career. Bonner is one steal shy of 100 in her career.
