Pioneers Win Charger Crown 7s Tournament

SHU went 4-1 to take home the trophy

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Sacred Heart University rugby team won the Chargers Crown 7s tournament on Sunday afternoon at the University of New Haven. The Pioneers went 4-1 on the day and took down American International in the championship game.

SHU opened the day with a 22-14 victory over New Haven. Caitlyn Caldon and Josie O'Donnell each tallied a pair of tries in the win, and Caldon brought in two more points with a good conversion. The Pioneers jumped to a 17-0 lead before UNH brought it within three 17-14 at 7:57. O'Donnell scored the final try of the game to secure the 22-14 victory.

Sacred Heart won its second game of the day, 24-15, over LIU.  After quickly trailing by five, Jailin Jackson scored a try, and Caldon had a good conversion to put the Pios up by two, 7-5. The Sharks answered with a try to jump back ahead, 10-7, but SHU battled back with a pair of tries from O'Donnell and Caldon, along with a good conversion for Caldon to give SHU a 19-10 lead. Makena Wright added five points for the Pioneers to extend the lead, 24-10. LIU added one more try, but SHU secured the 24-15 win.

Sacred Heart fell to AIC in the third game of the day, 22-19. AIC scored first, but Caldon got the Pioneers on the board to tie it up 5-5. The Yellow Jackets scored a pair of tries and a good conversion to jump ahead 17-5. O'Donnell answered for SHU with a try and a good conversion from Caldon to cut the deficit to 17-12. AIC added one more to take a 22-12 lead, but Caldon was not done for SHU. She scored a try and had a good conversion to pull within three, 22-19, but AIC came out on top to hand SHU its first loss of the day.

The championship game was a rematch of the Pioneer's lone setback as Sacred Heart took on AIC for the Charger Crown trophy. The Pioneers quickly jumped ahead 12-0, coming from tries for Caldon and Reagan Vander-Heide, and a good conversion for Caldon. The Yellow Jackets got on the board and pulled within five, 12-7 before a pair of O'Donnell tries put SHU ahead 22-10. AIC added seven points, but Wright and Caldon tallied a try each to secure the Pios 29-14 victory for the championship.

The Pioneers will be back in action next Sunday, April 21, at the Quinnipiac 7s Tournament.
