Rugby Wins Quinnipiac 7s Tournament

SHU won its second straight 7s tournament

HAMDEN, Mass.—The Sacred Heart University rugby team went 3-1 en route to winning the Quinnipiac 7s Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers and the Bobcats finished with a 3-1 record, but SHU held the tiebreaker with its win over Quinnipiac earlier in the day to win the tournament.

Alyssa Cunningham: 8 tries, 2-for-3 conversions (44 points)
Reese Torticill: 2 tries, 5-for-13 conversions (20 points)
Josie O'Donnell: 3 tries (15 points)
Caitlyn Caldon: 3 tries (15 points)
Avonlea Wood: 2 tries (10 points 

Of Note:
Sacred Heart opened the day early, opening the tournament with Quinnipiac at 8:00 am. The Pios put on the pressure and forced QU to play in their half for about 75% of the match. Alyssa Cunningham led the way with a pair of tries and one conversion for 12 points. Josie O'Donnell added a try, and Resse Torticill had a good conversion as Sacred Heart opened the day with a 19-14 victory over the Bobcats.

Up next, the Pioneers had a dominant performance shutting out LIU 32-0. Cunnigham and Caitlyn Caldon each recorded a pair of tries, while Torticill and O'Donnell added a try each. Torticill also had a good conversion as the Pioneers won their second straight match of the day.

SHU had a very close match against AIC, where four different Pioneers tallied a try, but the Yellow Jackets were able to come out on top, 19-17.

Heading into the final match of the day with a  2-1 record, SHU collected its third win of the day, 36-10 over Army. Cunningham scored three tries and had one conversion for 17 points in the match. Caldon, Torticill, and Avonlea Wood each added a try, and Torticill went two-for-five on conversions as Sacred Heart wrapped up the day with the win.

Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart both finished the day with a 3-1 record, but since the Pioneers beat the Bobcats earlier in the day, SHU held the tiebreaker to win the tournament.
