Pioneers Fall in Back-and-Forth Battle with Huskies

Boston, Mass. – The Sacred Heart women's basketball team concluded its four-game road trip with a visit to Northeastern on Saturday afternoon, dropping a back-and-forth battle to the Huskies by a 68-60 margin.

A pair of first year's led the Pioneers on the afternoon with Jordanna Schrecker coming off the bench to score a team-high 11 points and Sophie Nascimento following her with 10. Schrecker saw the majority of her 11 points come from outside the three-point arc where she was 3-of-6 for the game, while adding the remaining two at the free throw line.

Following the rookie pair in the scoring column was Nalyce Dudley and Emma Kirby with eight each while Amelia Wood rounded out the leading scorers with eight points. As a team, the Pioneers shot 35.3 percent from the field, connecting on 18-of-51, including six three pointers. SHU was also 18-of-28 at the free throw line.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES

·       Dudley would put the first points on the board draining a pair of free throws on the Pioneers opening possession.

·       Northeastern followed that scoring the next 11 straight to build a nine point lead before the first SHU bucket would fall.

·       A layup from Sierra Johnson as she drove across the lane just inside the five minute mark would be the first field goal for Sacred Heart, while Dianne Crespo López followed as she came off the bench for a corner three.

·       Schrecker wrapped up the first quarter scoring with a deep straight away three pointer as time expired on the shot clock.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES

·       Schrecker kept her first quarter momentum into the second period when she connected on a pair from outside the give her nine points in a stretch of just over seven minutes.

·       Her success from long range and holding the Huskies to just one field goal over the first seven-plus minutes of the second quarter allowed the Pioneers to rattle off eight unanswered and pull within one, 22-21.

·       A layup from Nascimento with just under 90 seconds to play before intermission knotted the score at 23, the first tie of the game.

·       After a pair of free throws, one each from Crespo Lopez and Wood brought the score back to a stalemate at 25 before the Huskies converted on the last possession of the half to take a 26-25 lead into the break.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES

·       It was all free throws at the start of the half with Johnson and Wood each converting a pair, the second two from Wood knotted the score at 29.

·       Nascimento converted the first basket of the half for the Pioneers, knotting the score at 31 as she down the right side of the lane for a pair.

·       After the Huskies managed to open up four-point lead with 3:51 remaining in the quarter, Esther Kersite and Nascimento would go back-to-back with Nascimento hitting from outside the arc to flip the score back in favor of the Pioneers at 40-39.

·       Northeastern answered with back-to-back baskets of their own and took a 44-41 lead into the final quarter break.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES

·       Dudley opened up the fourth quarter with a layup just 10 seconds into the action and would follow that with a three pointer 40 second later that pulled Sacred Heart within one at 47-46.

·       SHU would manage one more lead change with Nascimento again providing the offense, this time on a pair of free throws that followed a layup from Johnson that led to a 50-49 lead.

·       The Huskes would retake the lead on the next possession and go on to secure the victory at the free throw line, going 13-of-14 over the final three minutes.

UP NEXT
For just the second time this season, the Pioneers will return to the Pitt Center when they next take the court to close out action in the month of November with a visit from the Mercy Mavericks. The match-up versus the Division II team renews a series that took a one-year hiatus last season. Tip-off from Dave Bike Court in the Pitt Center is slated for 7:00 p.m. with all of the action available live on ESPN+.
