THE LEAD
Two games remain in the non-conference slate and it begins on the road for the Sacred Heart women's basketball team as they make their second trip to the DMV Area, this time stopping in the Blue Crab State to take on the Coppin State Eagles on Saturday afternoon.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
Despite putting up an impressive fight against the Great Danes, the Pioneers will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they face a Coppin State team who has lost its last seven straight games. Leading the Pioneers into the weekend match-up with the Eagles is senior guard Amelia Wood who has led the team in scoring in four of the five games and is the lone player to average double figures at 12.9 ppg. Additionally, Wood leads the team in rebounding with a 5.9 per game average, assists with 12, steals with 14 and blocks with six. After increasing her career-high in scoring to 19 against UAlbany, junior forward Nalyce Dudley vaulted into the second position in the scoring column with an average of 9.0 ppg while shooting at a team-high 49 percent (25-of-51). As a team, the Pioneers are shooting 35.2 percent from the field (132-of-375) with 29 of the 132 baskets from outside the arc. Despite a season low 13 turnovers against UAlbany, the biggest area of improvement for the Pioneers needs to come in ball control as they are currently turning the ball over at a clip of 19.1 turnovers per game.
SCOUTING COPPIN STATE
With losses in their last seven straight games, the Eagles enter the weekend with a 1-8 overall record and looks to get back into the win column before heading on the road for four-straight games all before the holiday break. As a team, Coppin State has been held below its average of 55.3 ppg in five games this season and are coming off of a 75-53 home loss to Marshall on Wednesday night. For the season, CSU is led by senior guard Khila Morris who is averaging 11.7 points per game and represents the only player to average in double figures. Morris also leads the way with 27 assists and 13 steals. Sophomore forward Shanaii Gamble follows Morris with an average of 7.2 ppg. As a team, the Eagles are shooting 33.9 percent from the field (168-of-495) including 39 field goals from beyond the three-point arc.
SERIES HISTORY VS COPPIN STATE
· Saturday's game will be just the second between the Pioneers and Eagles in the all-time history of the two programs.
· Coppin State won the initial meeting last season, scoring a 12-point (59-47) win at The Pitt Center in late November.
