FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team is back at the Pitt Center on Saturday, Feb. 22, to play Saint Peter's at 2 p.m. in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.

OPENING TIP

Sacred Heart put together one of its best games of the season to roll to a 74-48 victory over Merrimack on Thursday evening. Following an even start to the game, SHU began to pull away midway through the first quarter with a 14-0 run. The Pioneers took the first by a 24-14 margin. Sacred Heart added to its lead with a 13-2 surge to start the second to build a 44-24 halftime advantage. SHU's hold on the game never wavered in the second half, as the lead reached a game-high 28, 73-45, before late free throws settled the margin at 26. For the 13th straight game,
Ny'Ceara Pryor led the Pios in points, with 19 against the Warriors. She ended up pacing the team in scoring, rebounds (9), assists (7) and steals (4).
Amelia Wood was also on fire against Merrimack, hitting four 3-pointers to score 16 points.
Emma Kirby also crossed double figures with 12 points and six boards.
HOME COOKING
For the third time this season, Wood hit three or more 3-pointers in a game, with all three coming at the Pitt Center. The outstanding junior first hit a season-high five triples against Monmouth in the opening of the renovated Pitt Center to lead SHU to a 63-56 win over the Hawks on Nov. 21. She then hit three treys against Fairfield in the thrilling MAAC contest on Feb. 8 before burying four on Thursday.
SCOUTING SAINT PETER'S
- The Saints have been on a roll lately, winning three of their last four games, including a 70-54 victory over fourth-place Mount St. Mary's on Thursday.
- Saint Peter's held Jo Raflo, the conference's fifth-leading scorer (16.0 ppg.), to just two points in a defensive showcase.
- SPU is now seventh in the MAAC at 7-8, with a 9-15 overall record.
- Thursday's win over the Mountaineers came in Jersey City, where the Saints are 7-3.
- However, Saint Peter's has struggled on the road as they are 2-12 away from the Garden State.
- Sophomore forward Fatmata Janneh continues to lead the way for the Saints, as she is first in the MAAC in rebounds (10.7) and second in points per game (18.3), trailing Pryor.
- Janneh is fourth in the country in defensive rebounds (8.9), 13th in total rebounds per game and 14th in double-doubles (13).
- Junior guard Louella Allana has also been critical to SPU's approach this season, as she leads the MAAC in assists per game (5.7) and paces the team in minutes per game (35.78).
