Women’s Basketball Plays Fairfield in Last Road Game of Regular Season

The Pios and Stags are set to tip off at 7 p.m.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team heads to Fairfield on Saturday for its final road game of the 2024-25 regular season, as it battles the Stags at 7 p.m. at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena.

OPENING TIP
  • The Pioneers head crosstown on Saturday evening for a primetime bout against Fairfield at 7 p.m. at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena. 
  • Saturday will mark the 20th all-time meeting between the Pios and the Stags. 
  • SHU goes into Saturday off a 68-61 road loss to Marist on Thursday evening in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 
  • The Red Foxes led by eight after the first quarter, but SHU trimmed the deficit to two by the midway point of the second. 
  • After Marist retook a double-digit lead over the end of the second and third quarters, SHU started to rally again in the fourth. 
  • The Pioneers put together a 10-0 run at the beginning of the fourth to get within five points, but a long scoreless draught by both teams was enough for Marist to hold on to the win. 
  • For the ninth time this year, Ny'Ceara Pryor tallied 20+ points with 25 against the Red Foxes, which led all scorers.
  • Emma Kirby was next on the Pioneers with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

LAST TIME OUT
Sacred Heart fell on the road Thursday at Marist by a 68-61 final score. The Red Foxes led by eight points after the first quarter, but SHU rallied to cut the margin to two points, 29-27, by 6:17 in the second. The Red Foxes rebuilt its double-digit lead over the next 16:17 before SHU started to rally in the fourth. Sacred Heart put together a 10-0 run at the start of the fourth to cut the deficit to five after and-ones from Amelia Wood, Ny'Ceara Pryor and Nalyce Dudley. SHU got as close as five points, 66-61, again at 4:08 but a long scoreless draught by both teams was enough for the Red Foxes to clinch the victory. Pryor tallied her ninth 20+ point game of the season with 25 against the Red Foxes to pace all scorers. Kirby was next on the Pioneers with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double, her second of the season. 

LEADERBOARD WATCH
Pryor is on the cusp of climbing more SHU all-time leaderboards as she continues to solidify herself as one of the greatest Pioneers of all-time. Heading into Saturday, the Baltimore native is two shy of becoming the third Pioneer in program history to tally 400 career assists. She is also fifth on the all-time scoring list at 1,722, 55 points shy of cracking the top four. Pryor has also climbed to second on the all-time steals leaderboard this season with 337, 25 shy of first.

SCOUTING FAIRFIELD
  • The Stags are still undefeated in MAAC play this season at 17-0 and are 23-3 overall this season. 
  • After SHU battled Fairfield to a six-point defeat on Feb. 8, the Stags have won their last four games by an average of 28.8 points. 
  • The Stags have been one of the most well-rounded teams in the country, as they rank 10th in scoring margin (21.3), 11th in scoring defense (53.8) and 45th in scoring offense (75.0), all of which leads the MAAC. 
  • Graduate guard Izabela Nicoletti-Leite leads the balanced offense, ranking fifth in the country with a 3.29 assist-to-turnover ratio. 
  • Sophomores Meghan Andersen and Kaety L'Amoreaux lead the offense with 14.7 and 13.2 points per game, respectively. 
 
SERIES HISTORY 
  • The crosstown rivals will meet for the 20th time in the two teams' histories on Saturday. 
  • Fairfield increased its lead in the all-time series to 12-7 after taking the first matchup this season. 
  • The Pioneers and Stags are 3-3 over the last six meetings.
