Pioneers Cruise Past Iona for Third Straight Win

Multiple players hit career milestones

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.— With a career-high six points, Michael Moreschi led the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team to a 16-1 victory over Iona on Wednesday afternoon on the road in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. The Pioneers had eight different goal scorers and four players with multipoint performances. The one goal allowed is the fewest goals allowed in program history.

Of Note:
Michael Moreschi scored back-to-back goals one minute and 10 seconds into the game to kick off the Pioneers offensive showdown. Tucker Spencer added his first of five at 5:17 in the opening frame to give Sacred Heart a 3-0 edge heading into the second quarter. 

The Pioneers added six goals in the second period, including a pair from Spencer and one from Moreschi to complete his hat trick. John Murray, James Moran, and Will Moulton all found the back of the net as the Pioneers took a 9-0 lead at the half. 

Murray and Moreschi scored back-to-back goals to extend SHU's lead to 11-0. Iona tallied its lone goal of the day at 8:00 in the third for an 11-1 score heading into the final quarter.

Spencer scored two straight goals to push the Pios ahead 13-1. In the final two minutes of play, Sacred Heart had three players score their first career goal, EJ Garvey, Cooper Callahan, and Koen Rose, to secure the 16-1 final. 

Goalkeeper Alex Pazienza made eight saves in his time in the cage, and junior Craig Daria made his season debut in goal for the final 10:34 of the game. 

In total, the Pioneers won 14 of 21 face-offs, coming from Luke Romanek (9-12), Nicky Casano (4-6), and MP Thomas (1-3). 

Michael Amoruso picked up a career-high eight ground balls on the defensive end as the Pioneers finished with 50 total.
