Pioneers Fall to Jessup in Season Opener

Sacred Heart shows early flashes in Monday night matchup at the Pitt Center

FAIRFIELD, CONN. — The Sacred Heart University Men's Volleyball Team opened the 2026 season by hosting the Jessup University Warriors from the Golden State on Monday Night at the Pitt Center.

Records:

Sacred Heart (0-1)

Jessup  (1-3)

Top Performers:

Aleksa Mandic - 8 kills

Armaan Dosanjh: 17 assists

How it Happened:

Jessup took control in the opening set, building an early lead despite Sacred Heart generating offense throughout the frame. An Alec Niemczyk kill briefly made it 7-4 before Petr Beranek followed with a kill to close the gap at 9-5. Armaan Dosanjh added a service ace to pull the Pioneers within 14-9, and Aleksa Mandic continued the push with a kill to make it 17-11. Beranek later connected off an assist from Ivo Dubs to narrow the margin to 18-13, and Mandic added back-to-back kills late, but Jessup held on to take the first set, 25-20.

The Warriors again jumped out early in the second set, opening up a 7-3 advantage before Sacred Heart responded with five straight points, capped by another Mandic kill, to pull ahead 8-7. The teams traded points as Beranek and Mandic combined for three consecutive points to give SHU a brief 12-11 edge. Four straight points off Jessup errors later allowed the Pioneers to stay within reach at 16-14, but Jessup maintained its composure down the stretch to claim the second set, 25-21.

Sacred Heart struck first in the third set as Mandic opened the scoring with a kill, but Jessup answered and built an 11-8 lead. The Pioneers responded with three straight points off Warriors errors to tie the set and regain momentum, however Jessup pulled away late to secure the final set, 25-18, and complete the straight-set victory.
