Baseball Falls to No. 20 Wake Forest, 14-1 in Season-Opener

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Sacred Heart University baseball team fell to No. 20 Wake Forest, 14-1, in the 2019 season-opener on Friday afternoon.

The Pioneers had four different players record a hit, with Austin Markmann's two hits leading the way. Dan Fallacaro drove in the lone run for the Pioneers.

NOTES (Wake Forest 14, SHU 1):

  • Brent Teller got the start and took the loss after giving up eight earned runs on six hits in two innings of work

  • Luke Hansen gave up one run and three hits, while striking out four in three innings of work in his collegiate debut

  • Austin Markmann led the way with two hits in the loss

  • Stephen Thibault, Justin Jordan and Jake Frasca each tallied a hit in the loss

  • Dan Fallacaro drove in the lone SHU run

  • The Demon Deacons took a 1-0 in the first inning after loading the bases and scoring on a passed ball

  • Wake Forest added four runs in the following inning to hold a 5-0 lead through two

  • Wake Forest scored six runs in the third, starting with a bases loaded two-run double to put SHU in a 7-0 hole

  • After the Demon Deacons loaded the bases again with one out, they tallied four more runs in the inning on a bases loaded walk, followed by a two-run single and a fielder's choice to take a commanding 11-0 lead

  • Wake Forest added another run in the fifth after Chris Lanzilli launched a solo homer to give the Demon Deacons a 12-0 lead

  • Wake Forest tacked on two runs in the eighth after scoring on a bases loaded walk, then a fielder's choice two batters later

  • The Pioneers were able to push a run across the plate in the ninth after Markmann led off with a double

  • Fallacaro followed with a fielder's choice, allowing the run to score

The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 16, when SHU takes on Georgetown at noon.
