Baseball Loses Opener at LIU, 10-4

BROOKLYN, NY - Long Island University used a seven-run second inning, highlighted by a Gerard Tingos grand slam homer, to defeat visiting Sacred Heart University 10-4 Friday afternoon.

The Pioneers, 10-15 overall and 2-3 in conference play, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Robert Griffith tripled and Chris Whittemore drove him home with a single.

The Blackbirds, now 4-5 in the NEC, used seven hits and a pair of Pioneer errors to score the seven runs in the bottom of the frame. The homer by Tingos, his first of the year, came with one out in the inning off SHU starter Chris Zaccherio.

LIU got two more in the bottom of the fifth, chasing Zaccherio from the game with the Blackbirds leading 10-1. Chris Dionisio came out of the bullpen and pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Senior catcher Jeff Heppner blasted his sixth homer of the season for the Pioneers in the sixth inning, a solo shot. He has a team-high 26 RBI.

The two teams will square off for a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
