Men's Basketball's Second-Half Comeback Falls Short in 82-77 Loss at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite a second-half comeback attempt, the Sacred Heart men's basketball team fell to Brown, 82-77, in day two of the Brown Bears Tipoff Classic Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Pioneers had four players score in double-figures, with E.J. Anosike leading the way with 17 points and 16 rebounds for the first Pioneer double-double of the season. Jare'l Spellman and Aaron Clarke scored 16 points apiece, while Sean Hoehn added 11 in the loss.

  • The Pioneers had four players record double-figure points in the loss (Anosike 17, Clarke 16, Spellman 16, Hoehn 11)

  • It is the second time this season that the Pioneers had at least four players score in double-figures, as SHU had five players score at least 10 points or more in its win over Western New England on Nov. 12

  • E.J. Anosike recorded a double-double, tallying 17 points and 16 rebounds, one point and one rebound shy of his tying his career-highs

  • Anosike's double-double was the third of his career and it was the first one recorded by a Pioneer since Joseph Lopez dropped 17 points and 11 rebounds against LIU Brooklyn on Feb. 24, 2018

  • 10 of Anosike's rebounds came on the offensive end

  • Jare'l Spellman tallied a career-high 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots

  • Sean Hoehn scored 11 points in the win and is the only Pioneer to score double-figure points in all four of the Pioneers' contests this season

  • The Pioneers had seven different players record a steal in the loss

  • Hoehn recorded three steals in the loss, he has tallied three steals in back-to-back contests

  • After an Aaron Clarke three-pointer cut the SHU deficit to 17-16 with 13:18 remaining in the first half, Brown responded with an 11-3 run to push its lead to 28-19 with 6:59 remaining in the half

  • Brown outscored SHU 14-9 the rest of the half to go into halftime with a 42-28 lead

  • After Brown pushed its lead to 55-41 in the second half, the Pioneers used a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to 59-56 with 9:01 remaining in regulation

  • During the run, SHU went 5-for-7 from the field, while holding Brown to 1-for-5 during the run

  • Sean Hoehn scored nine of the 15 points for the Pioneers during the run

  • After an E.J. Anosike layup cut the SHU deficit to 69-68 with 2:31 remaining in regulation, Brown responded with a 6-2 run to take a 75-70 lead with 1:30 remaining

  • Trailing 77-72, Clarke was able to get to the free-throw line and knocked down both to cut the deficit 77-74 with 50 seconds remaining

  • Anosike was fouled on the ensuing possession and nailed both shots to bring the score to 77-76

  • Brown responded with a three-pointer to push its lead to 80-76 and held on to secure the 82-77 final


Sacred Heart will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 18, when the Pioneers take on UMass Lowell at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+ in the final day of competition at the Brown Bears Tipoff Classic.
