Second-Half Rally Falls Short as Men's Basketball Falls to Wagner, 76-73

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Sacred Heart University men's basketball had its two-game win streak snapped as the Pioneers fell to Wagner, 76-73, on the road Thursday evening at Spirto Sports Center. The loss drops the Pioneers to 6-10 and 2-1 in the NEC on the year, while the Seahawks improve to 7-7 and 2-1 in the NEC.

The Pioneers had three players score in double-figures with Koreem Ozier leading the way with 19 points. E.J. Anosike added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Jare'l Spellman chipped in 10 points and three blocks in a losing effort.

  • After SHU battled to cut the deficit to 35-26 with 4:10 left in the half, Wagner closed the half with an 11-6 run to take a 46-32 lead into the half

  • SHU shot 40% from the field in the first half, compared to Wagner's 51.9%

SECOND HALF

  • The Pioneers used the opening 4:15 to go on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 48-39 with 15:45 left in the half

  • After Wagner pushed its lead to 56-44 with 12:46 remaining, the Pioneers went on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to 59-54 with 8:47 to go in the half

  • Wagner responded with an 8-4 run to extend its lead to 67-58 with 5:54 remaining

  • Sean Hoehn nailed a three-pointer to halt the run and cut the deficit to 67-61 with five minutes remaining

  • The Pioneers were able to cut the deficit to 73-69 with 31 seconds remaining, but they were unable to overcome the hurdle as SHU fell 76-73
