Foil Group Dominates for Men’s Fencing at NFC Meet #1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was a banner day for the foil group as the Sacred Heart men's fencing team competed in the Northeast fencing Conference Meet #1 on Sunday afternoon hosted by Brown University. The Pioneers lost four-of-five bouts on the day but recorded a 3-2 record with the foil weapon through the course of the five-round competition.

Among the individual standouts on the day included first-year Lawrence Tan who led the team with a cumulative 13-2 combined record through the five dual meets on the day. Included in Tan's 13-win total was a 5-0 triumph over Brown's Division IA national champion Nicholas Andrade. Sophomore Tomas Koeck, also of the Pioneers' foil group, finished with a mark of 10-5 on the day while he closed out the foil victory over the host Brown.

The day started with a bang as Tan recorded his 5-0 victory over Andrade while Koeck finished off the foil victory over Brown with a tightly-contested battle with Eduard Munoz-Sune as the foil group recorded a 5-4 win over the Bears. Brown, however, went on to win the dual meet by a score of 18-9 via wins in epee (5-4) and sabre (9-0).

Another tightly contested meet came in the next round as SHU dropped a 19-8 decision to Brandeis but lost both the foil and epee rounds by 5-4 margins.

The Pioneers recorded their lone win of the day in round four as SHU dropped New Hampshire by a convincing margin of 24-3. Included in the victory was a pair of 9-0 sweeps in the foil and epee weapon rounds while the sabre group won their only round of the day with a 6-3 margin. Stephen Clarke, Trent Miller and Massimo Bacchiocchi each tallied two wins in the sabre round to defeat the Wildcats.

Facing off against one of the top teams in the Northeast, the Pioneers had their hands full with Boston College as the Eagles won 23-4 with a pair of 9-0 sweeps in the epee and sabre. Depsite the 19-point loss, the foil group again showed well with a tightly-faught 5-4 loss with the weapon as Tan and Koeck each tallied two wins.

Wins for SHU came in the foil (7-2) and epee (5-4) while the sabre sweep for MIT swung the decision in their favor.
