The Sacred Heart University Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be collecting donations at the Saturday night football home opener. The collection will benefit the American Red Cross and its efforts to aid those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
"We have all been struck by the images we have seen the past week and our SAAC members are looking to assist in as many ways as possible," said Chris O'Connor Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs. "This financial collection Saturday night is just the first of many steps they are planning."
All fans that make a contribution will receive a voucher redeemable for a ticket to a future Pioneer home game. Contributions will be accepted at the gates of Campus Field through opening kickoff.
What does the Red Cross do with donations? The organization provides things like shelter, meals and comfort kits, and 91 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to provide aid. The Red Cross has already provided the following has already provided over 25,000 shelter nights, 80,000 meals served and distributed nearly 10,000 comfort kits.
Saturday's game kicks off at 6 p.m. versus Stetson. It is also the Second Annual Hero's Day game, with all first responders, active military and veterans being admitted to the game free of charge.
