FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After winning its fifth consecutive season opener last Saturday night, the Sacred Heart football team travels to face the Lafayette Leopards on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Pioneers rushed for 301 yards last week in a 42-3 win over the Stetson Hatters at Campus Field. Senior quarterback Kevin Duke led the charge with 236 yards of total offense and four touchdowns. He rushed for a career-high 81 yards and three touchdowns while passing for 155 yards and another score. Duke also completed his first 12 pass attempts in the game and was named Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Sophomore running back Imamu Mayfield led the SHU rushing attack with a career-high 93 yards and scored his first career touchdown.
The SHU defense held Stetson to 145 yards of total offense last week. The last time the Pioneers held an opponent under 150 yards was Nov. 1, 2014 at Wagner when the Seahawks had 142 yards of total offense. SHU also held Stetson to just 18 rushing yards, marking the sixth time since 2013 that the Pioneers held an opponent under 20 yards rushing.
THIS WEEK'S MATCHUP
SHU lead the all-time series against Lafayette 2-1. The Pioneers have won the last two meetings against the Leopards, including a 27-14 win at Campus Field in 2014. The SHU defense had three interceptions in that victory as RJ Noel rushed for two touchdowns. In the 2013 meeting at Fisher Stadium, Alec Finney made a last-second 42-yard field goal to give SHU a 26-24 win. The Pioneers are 4-5 all-time against the Patriot League.
Picked sixth in the Patriot League preseason poll, Lafayette opened 2017 last Saturday with a 31-12 loss at Monmouth. Quarterback Sean O'Malley threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions. Matt Mrazek caught nine passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. Michael Root led the Lafayette defense with nine tackles and a sack.
