Pioneers Run Away In Second Half For 38-24 Win At Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Led by a combined 197 rushing yards from Jordan Meachum and Ose Imeokparia, the Sacred Heart football team defeated the Lafayette Leopards 38-24 at Fisher Stadium.

Sacred Heart moved to 2-0 on the season, defeating Lafayette (0-2) for the third time in the series. Meachum rushed for 98 yards and a career-high two touchdowns. Imeokparia had 97 rushing yards and a pair of scores. Kevin Duke completed 19 of 25 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for another 73 yards. Defensively, CJ Parvelus and Alec Finelli each had seven tackles. Max Trudeau, Chris Agyemang, and Jake Davis each had a sack.


The Turning Point

Trailing 10-3 with 1:50 left in the second quarter, SHU started a drive at its own 20 yardline. The eight-play drive included passes by Duke of 31 yards to RJ Trimble-Edwards and 21 to Byron Barney to get the Pioneers to the Lafayette nine yardline. On third and goal from the seven, Duke found Andrew O'Neill across the middle for a touchdown that tied the game 10-10 with 0:15 left.

The Pioneers got the ball to start the second half and took the lead on an eight-yard touchdown run by Imeokparia, going ahead 17-10 at the 12:11 mark of the third. After the two teams traded punts, SHU forced a turnover on downs with 3:26 left in the quarter. Taking over at their own 31 yardline, the Pioneers drove 69 yards in nine plays to go up 24-10. With third and five at the Lafayette 32, Duke connected with Barney on a 28-yard pitch-and-catch to set up first and goal at the four yardline. Two plays later, Meachum scored from one yard out to give SHU a 24-10 lead.

11:17 1Q – Lafayette 3, SHU 0; After O'Neill fumbled a punt, the SHU defense the Leopards to a 34-yard field goal by Jeffrey Kordenbrock.

9:09 1Q – Lafayette 10, SHU 0; A Duke interception by Phillip Parham set up the Leopards for a three-play, 15-yard drive punctuated by a nine-yard pass from Sean O'Malley to DeSean Brown.

8:18 2Q – Lafayette 10, SHU 3; The Pioneers drove all the way down to the Lafayette two yardline, but had to settle for a 19-yard Josh Freiria field goal.

0:15 2Q – SHU 10, Lafayette 10; SHU ties the game with an eight-play, 80-yard drive on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Duke to O'Neill.

12:11 3Q – SHU 17, Lafayette 10; Imeokparia's eight-yard touchdown run caps a nine-play, 48-yard drive that took 2:45 off the clock and put the Pioneers in front.

0:14 3Q – SHU 24, Lafayette 10; Jordan Meachum's one-yard touchdown plunge gets SHU a two-touchdown lead.

10:44 4Q – SHU 31, Lafayette 10; The drive was set up by an 82-yard interception return by Khamal Whitaker. After a penalty spotted the ball at the Lafayette 46, it took SHU four plays to score. Imeokparia punched in a two-yard run to put the Pioneers ahead by 21. He had a run of 25 yards on the play before his touchdown.

8:11 4Q – SHU 31, Lafayette 17; The Leopards answered with a five-yard touchdown pass from O'Malley to Nick Pearson.

3:32 4Q – SHU 38, Lafayette 17; After a Davis sack on fourth down gave SHU the ball at the Leopards' 24 yardline, Meachum scored three plays later on a 22-yard touchdown. He gained all 24 yards on the drive.

1:21 4Q – SHU 38, Lafayette 24; O'Malley throws his third touchdown pass of the game on a 12-yard pass to Matt Mrazek.


Key Stats and Notes… 

- SHU was 9-for-14 on third down, converting five of seven in the second half. Lafayette was 5-for-12 on third down.

- After rushing for 301 yards in last week's win over Stetson, SHU rushed for 287 yards against the Leopards.

- The SHU defense held Lafayette to 40 yards rushing.
