DAYTONA BEACH, FL (May 6, 2012) - Sacred Heart senior Leopoldo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) sat atop the leader board for all three rounds on his way to winning individual medalist honors at the 2012 Northeast Conference Championship in Daytona Beach. The Pioneers finishd the event fourth overall.
Garcia took home medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 219, edging out Ian Thimble of Monmouth who posted a 220. Garcia fired even par rounds of 72 on Friday and Saturday and shot 75 in Sunday's final round.
He becomes the second Pioneer in program history to claim the NEC individual title, joining Ryan Riley who won the 2002 event. Riley rebounded from an 81 in the first round with a 69 in the final round to force a three-way tie for first. He went on to win the event in a play-off.
The Pioneers shot a team score of 310 on Sunday, finishing the tournament with a total of 919 (309-300-310). The Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers led wire to wire, taking home the 2012 championship with a total score of 900 (297-303-300). LIU Brooklyn and Fairleigh Dickinson tied for second place with matching 918 scores.
Junior Joshua Salah (Gloucester, MA) finished tied for 25th overall with a score of 234 (74-77-83). Will Smittle (Scarsdale, NY) was tied for 30th overall with a score of 236 (79-81-76) and Sam Barber (North Bay Ontario) was 35th with a score of 238 (84-75-79).
